I haven't tested this, nor am I going to guarantee that
it will work.  I read your post quickly, and thought I
may have the answer.  I guess you'll be able to test it
and find out. =)

You've got the right idea, you just need to take it a
step further.

The files you need to edit are probably the /etc/fstab
and /etc/lilo.conf (or grub configuration) files.  Now,
to do it..

Follow the steps you already completed above.  When you
get to the root shell prompt, you want to type..

mount -t ext2 -o remount,rw /dev/hdf6 /

.. or whatever the appropriate command line is.  That
*should* remount your root file system read-write, and
you'll be able to make the needed changes.  If you're
using LILO, make sure to re-run "lilo".  Then, give a
quick "shutdown -r now" and pray for the best.

If that doesn't work out for you, let us know.  Us gurus
will figure something out. =)
