Thanks Don,
That did the trick. I went ahead and used the properly mounted shell access
to fix both my mtab and my fstab. and I fixed my error and made the entry
for the old kernel for a backup like I should have in the first place.
:)
One way or another us Windoze guys will learn to depend on our own brain. :)

Subject: RE: [Cooker] A Gotcha upgrading the kernel
I haven't tested this, nor am I going to guarantee that
it will work. I read your post quickly, and thought I
may have the answer. I guess you'll be able to test it
and find out. =)
The key is right here:

You've got the right idea, you just need to take it a
step further.
The files you need to edit are probably the /etc/fstab
and /etc/lilo.conf (or grub configuration) files. Now,
to do it..
Follow the steps you already completed above. When you
get to the root shell prompt, you want to type..
mount -t ext2 -o remount,rw /dev/hdf6 /
.. or whatever the appropriate command line is. That
*should* remount your root file system read-write, and
you'll be able to make the needed changes. If you're
using LILO, make sure to re-run "lilo". Then, give a
quick "shutdown -r now" and pray for the best.
If that doesn't work out for you, let us know. Us gurus
will figure something out. =)
