Ok, Ok.... easy.
So you can see the kdm window ?
If this is the case then kdmrc has taken effect
and what can happen (I think) is only selecting
the right wm.
Let me now if I'm right.

Sorry,
I didn't follow the complete story...
But if I can help someone.
I have kde1 and 2 installed; so I can switch between
both without any pb.(and with kdm, also the users)
So I don't understand what can be happen exactly.
I thinh you checked already 'chksession -l' ??
to see what wm's are installed and did a kdmconfig ?
(Of course the little bug in kdmrc, you now the ',')
I'm using the kdm and others to start from kde1 !!
(not these from kde2)
