I have had this happen before - I think the reason is:
a) When you start X without a network card installed, it uses the hostname
localhost for xauth.
b) When you configure a network card from within X, the hostname changes,
but the xauth files are not updated.
c) All subsequent attempts to open X windows will fail, since the X
clients are attempting to connect using the new hostname but the old
xauth details.
I'm not sure what the most elegant way to fix this problem would be.
