I use a 2.4.1 kernel with devfs support, and a sblive card.
All alsa modules are loaded, but i have not all /dev/sound and /dev/snd
entries :

[root@agathe guillaume]# lsmod | grep snd
snd-card-emu10k1 2800 0 (unused)
snd-emu10k1 24016 0 [snd-card-emu10k1]
snd-pcm 31552 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-timer 8288 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-emux-mem 1872 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-rawmidi 9600 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-ac97-codec 24640 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-mixer 23888 0 [snd-emu10k1 snd-ac97-codec]
snd-seq-device 4128 0 [snd-card-emu10k1 snd-rawmidi]
snd 36944 1 [snd-card-emu10k1 snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm
snd-timer snd-emux-mem snd-rawmidi snd-ac97-codec snd-mixer snd-seq-device]
soundcore 4112 2 [snd]
[root@agathe guillaume]# ls /dev/snd
controlC0 controlC3 controlC6 mixerC0D0 pcmC0D1c
controlC1 controlC4 controlC7 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D2c
controlC2 controlC5 midiC0D0 pcmC0D0p timer
[root@agathe guillaume]# ls /dev/sound
dmmidi midi00
I have full compatibility with old devices names and alsa perms checked
correctly in /etc/devfsd.conf
REGISTER .* MKOLDCOMPAT
UNREGISTER .* RMOLDCOMPAT

LOOKUP snd MODLOAD ACTION snd
REGISTER sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660
REGISTER snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 660

So, what could be wrong ?

BTW, i also have esd starting problems , but i'm not sure it could be
related :

[guillaume@agathe guillaume]$ esd
esd: Failed to fix mode of /tmp/.esd to 1777.
Try -trust to force esd to start.
esd: Esound sound daemon unable to create unix domain socket:
