Heh, you're right.  Thanks for all the supplied information - I'll use

        "x$var" = "x"

from now on, because I think that

        x"$var" = x""

looks just plain ugly, especially the x"" part I cannot stand to see at all
:]  But you're reasoning about trying to use the same number of quotes on
both sides made a lot of sense to me.
