Update:
I'm pretty sure the real problem is that /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XftConfig does
not reflect what is really installed. The solution should be something like

Maybe some more changes are needed. Unfortunately I cannot test if my
assumption is correct, since I am at home now and I have only 7.2 here
and the old X server has no Xrender support...
The problem might also be related to the fact that I was not running Xfs
at the time, but I guess at least it should be possible to run KDE without
Xfs.
If the above patch is the solution, there should also be a dependency from
libqt2 on urw-fonts, because some strange things might otherwise be
happening in any qt applications.
