As Crhistian Bricart already posted it was a limit of kernel + libraries (glibc)
+ applications. I also remind that the EXT2 no longer had the
2GB limit also in Linux Mandrake 7.2 with kernel 2.2.17-21mdk
(patch from Andrea Arcangeli if I remember right). Of course a
the problem arose with applications. As Christianreported MC has
problems with that file, while ls -l don't (try with 5GB).

For instance which other filebased application will choke with BIG (>4GB)
files on i386? can someone test bzip2, gzip, postgresql? dumpfs, tar, etc.

Of course all the 64bit version of Linux, such as on alpha
never had this kind of problems.

Bye.
Giuseppe.
