METHOD OF INSTALLATION/UPGRADE = hd.img upgrading over existing cooker
install
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) INSTALL: Had to specify "options" for scsi adaptec 154x card (or
else this
would create an endless loop). On my initial fresh install of mdk 8.0
cooker,
it recognized my card by just doing "autoprobe". This time, it failed
and I had to enter "aha152x=0x340,11,7
2) INSTALL: USB Mouse was not activated on initial boot until the point
of
the install insmod'ed the usb-uhci driver. On the initial fresh
install, it was detected on boot with hd.img
3) INSTALL: GUI of the "stars" in the install program were
elongated...should be shorted or adjusted? (not really important).
5) INSTALL: Place a list of services with definitions. Some of the
services
have no definition when using the mouse-over feature!!! Didn't check
the "Help" feature to see if it had a more complete listing.
6) INSTALL: Ethernet find/config ask's twice to "Do you have another
one?" Should be only once.
7) INSTALL: LS120 <> Still does not work for a bootdisk device!
8) STARTUP: I like the graphical lilo, but dislike the Aurora since
it's always running int he background. Prefer to have a default of not
having aurora on boot(?) Also, using console is still more "readable"
for me.
9) DESKTOP: Fonts look terrible/unreadable on the "KDE LOGIN". But
they look nice else where! Except in the `terminals' ACK! I have my
windows fonts install prior to the upgrade...and then re-installed them
using DrakConf again just to make sure. Konqueror also has fonts way
too small to even read (Bitstream Charter set at 12 default). Also,
only 8 Font types are showing in Kcontrol > Fonts menu! Nvidia driver
0.97 cures some of the problems with fonts.
FONT ISSUE FOLLOW UP -- Had to go into Kcontrol > Konqueror > Fonts and
set the minumum font size from "7" to atleast "12"!
Also, I tried to change this setting directly from the Konqueror
settings menu but the menu was so in larged (640x480 and 800x600 screen
options) that i could not click "apply".
These are most kde issues tho.
10) DESKTOP: Kcontrol > Device Manager shows my ADAPTEC 152x SCSI as
an unknown device. All else appears to look ok.
11) DESKTOP: PANEL > "K" > "Log Out" and "Lock Screen" are too close to
the
"K" button...as such, it's way too easy to click "Log Out" and "Lock
Screen" buttons on the menu! I've been doing this all the time with
accidental mouse clicks! I think "WindowMaker" desktop icon's also has
this annoying feature in it's icons when you click to minimize/maximize
causing an accidental close/cancel of windows.
12) DESKTOP: Since I see allot of (new) apps, maybe you should include
a
build from the most recent release of "Mozilla"? It is much faster
also. Only downside is it's only has 56bit encryption...but i do most of
my stuff in Netscape 4.76 that has this option anyways.
13) DESKTOP: Clicking on K > Networking > WWW > Bluefish does nothing
Missing xawtv or tv capturing s/w (Broadcast 2000 does not appear
to work with the bttv cards)
13) DESKTOP: Running "kpackage" > File > Find file > (i specified
"tar") yeilds in kde crashing. Did a File > Find package > and
specified `tar' prior to this!)
14) DESKTOP: Xosview reports 242MB ram used...and using 13MB SWAP
used. Wow. Although the majority of Ram that is being used is
"Buffered" and "Cached".
15) DESKTOP: Linuxconf and Netconf don't work. yikes?
[root]# linuxconf
sub-dictionnary wineconf: Not enough messages 111 < 122
[root]# netconf
sub-dictionnary wineconf: Not enough messages 111 < 122
16) DEVELOPEMENT: doing:
./configure
Checking for perl...
Checking for POSIX threads...
Checking for Qt...
Error: could not find the Qt include files.
Please check your Qt installation and provide the --with-qt-includes if
necessary
Although the fix to this is obvious! I have noticed several problems
with
this when compiling with QT and QT2 sources!! Hopefully using QT2
solves this
issue completely.(?)
17) DEVELOPEMENT: NVIDIA Drivers 0.9-6 version
Will get a ton of unressolved symbols. Got them even prior to this
upgrade
over cooker. Works fine in mdk 7.2 tho, eh. Later, found out about the
0.9-7 recent driver release and they compile and seem to work fine in
cooker 8.0.
18) DESKTOP: Did a "restart X Server" at the login screen and the
xfree server crashed sending me back to the console. (this was prior to
fiddling with the nvidia driver)
19) Shutdown: On a last note, I noticed some services not getting "OK"
displayed when shutting down....nfs lock, etc...etc...
COMMENTS: I'm really happy to see that your staying current with Xfree
4.02 and KDE 2.1 latest packages! Although it didn't look like they'd
make it into the next release of mdk 8.0, I'm glad your adding these as
needed...and they are much desired! This is starting to look like I may
upgrade to mdk 8.0 after all. Personnally, I think you should upgrade
the majority of the packages just prior to release or freeze (ie. KDE,
Kernel, Xfree, ...).
One last question, will someone be building the rpm's for i686 and
higher archs or do most just use i586 rpm's? If so, where's a good
place to download the i686 rpm's? (....mainly, when this mdk version 8.0
is released) (Come to think of it, I guess I could build them inside of
cooker, since it'll have all the required packages install already
eh?...just thought of this...eh.)
