What do you get back from:
cdrecord -scanbus
In /etc/lilo.conf there should be an append line:
append="hdc=ide-scsi"
If you use lilo, and if /dev/hdc is your cdr.
After running lilo, at the next reboot it should be functional.
Also, you need the modules sg, ide-scsi and scsi_mod.
For mounting the cdrom you need then sr_mod.
You can check the loaded modules with lsmod, and load modules with
modprobe.
