<Sorry if you recognize this as a repeat -- I am apparently not conveying this message very clearly -- AFAICT, no one on the cooker list has taken notice of this message.> There is a problem with the installation of beta 3 of Mandrake 8.0. The same problem exists in the installation of Mandrake 7.2. That problem does not exist in the installation of Mandrake 7.0, because I am able to successfully install Mandrake 7.0. The problem is that, with my new system, I can't install X, and the entire installation hangs and does not complete. When I get to the X installation, I am presented with the choice to install XFree 3.3.6 or XFree 3.3.6 with experimental 3D support, and I am not presented with the choice to install XFree 4.0.3. (That is a minor problem, and may be because 4.0.3 does not support my video chipset, the SiS 630.) The big problem is that, whichever choice I make, I then get the following error message, and the installation hangs: "Can't call method "set_active" on an undefined value" This may be because some of the XFree SiS drivers don't support the SiS 630 chipset, but *the installation should not hang*! Mandrake 7.0 installs successfully by installing a generic SVGA driver (or the framebuffer?). Mandrake 7.2 and 8.0 should be able to do the same thing. (Note that the situation at XFree.org is confusing -- it appears that the SiS 630 is supported in the drivers for 3.3.6 and 4.0.2, but not in the driver for 4.0.3 -- I have sent them a note asking them to clarify the situation.) I would be happy (temporarily) with a workaround that let me do something like pass a parameter to the installation to force it to use the framebuffer, but I think this is a problem that needs to be resolved in a better way before shipping 8.0. Thanks, Randy Kramer PS: The system includes a Matsonic 8308 motherboard with on board video, sound, and ethernet. The on board ethernet is disabled so I can use a 10 Mhz. coax ethernet card (Realtek 8029). It has a Duron 700 Mhz. processor and 192 MB of RAM.
