It is reversible. I was experimenting with different options yesterday to
find a fix and I appearantly found it but now I can not get back to
the broken state to reproduce what I have done.
I also reinstalled font packages during the process and once put
a (superfluent) 'Load = "bitmap"' in XF86Config.

It seems there are at least two problems with the fonts that add up
to the uglyness:
- Type 1 rendering is far worse than it used to be. Running 'xset +fp
/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1' mostly reproduces the problems on a
Mandrake 7.2 system, but the fonts still don't look /that/ bad.
- In some configurations, fonts fail to get loaded. My problem was
that I could no longer load "-adobe-helvetica-*" (even though
'fslsfonts -u' showed it) in some apps. It would sometime get
replaced by 'courier' and sometimes by "-urw-helvetica-*', triggering
  the first problem!
