I have ~/.xinitrc but according to it's contents, it is either only
called by startx (and not gdm) or only used in the KDE desktop
(because I run gnome but mine contains the KDE startup commands)

I can understand gdm bypassing the user profile, but it still seems to
me a bug if it does not source /etc/profile.d -- every previous
incarnation of Linux sourced at least these files, and omitting them
breaks a lot of software.
