Why? I bet manufacturer knows hardware internals better than open source
developers. Most "open source" drivers are just reverse engineered windows
ones.

I use framebuffer with GF2MX for a long time without any problems.
That said, I do not know :-) I dual-boot between windows and linux, and my
son plays many games on windows, and Matrox is known to have massive problem
with 3D. That is one reason to prefer nVidia.
