Ahhhh.  The strace does show the loading of libsasl.... and an opening
of /usr/lib/sasl.  Nothing more seems to do with sasl.

The non-sasl version works great.  Somehow the use of SASL is
interfering with the use of CRAM-MD5 authentication, when it is there.
Perhaps SASL needs to be told to use CRAM-MD5 if available.  I can't
really say I know that much about SASL.
