Must be the region coding thing.. installed vlc, ran it from a console, and 
it repeats this over and over again:

input: opening file `/mnt/cdrom/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB'
intf error: signal 2 received, exiting
Read failed (Operation not permitted)
input: closing file `/mnt/cdrom/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB'

Is there some way to check the drive's region coding from Linux?
