Hi,
i do have any idea why xfs starts "from times to times only" in your
case.
Have you tried to remove your ~/.Xauthority that could be the origin of
the authentification problem ?
What do you get by dooing telinit 3 and then startx ?
I think you should have an XFree error log in your home dir then.
