But why does it work fine with the sawfish I am running with gnome on
the real display (:0).

Yup.

Actually it works quite well. I straced it and everything was being
done in /home/brian/testhome.

So it has to have something to do with my hardware/configuration here
then.

Well hardware wise I have:
- 800Mhz Athlon
- 384M memory
- U66 disk drive
- Matrox G400, dual head config, Xinerama, XFree86-4.1.0-7.1mdk
  (XFree86-4.1.0-7mdk + Matrox HAL lib)

I have DSL. 1.5Mb/s in to me, 128kb/s out to you.

I did that yesterday to do some tests. I am unable to start a second
X server under this account:

[root@pc rpms]# su - test
[test@pc test]$ xinit -- :1

Authentication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
xinit: unexpected signal 2

I guess only one non-root account can open a display? That sounds
like a bug to me.

I can. If you are still interested with my bandwidth contraints. I
trust you have a gpg key somewhere?
