Most people probably do it because they don't know exactly what will happen
if they choose the beginner mode. They feel the expert mode gives them more
control over what something unknown will do to their computer. Also they
think they might be missing some interesting stuff.
So what about only one installation path?
The installer could ask: try to auto detect everything? Ask before/after
auto detection? Don't use auto detection? That should cover (or even
extend?) the expert mode for the hardware detection.
For the other steps the expert stuff could be hidden by default and the
dialogs then have this "expand >>" button which shows everything. The
dangerous settings could be somehow marked.
