Yes switching to another gtk engine fixes the problem.
I am now using mandrake-desk-8.1-1mdk, and saw that this is still the
latest on cooker. As the problem is now known, I'm looking forward to
trying a new mandrake-desk with a fixed engine.
(the default gtk engine is so ugly (IMHO)).
