First things first, on an expert upgrade from 8.0, it ran fairly smootly
up until boot loader installation, but we'll get to that in a minute.
One annoyance was that tty1 was spammed with the error message:

gdk_imlib ERROR: Cannot load image: /mnt/tmp/drakx-images/<filename>
/usr/bin/convert: No such file or directory

Oops, the pretty pictures during package installation weren't there.

During boot loader installation, I selected LILO with graphical menu
(and text in the next attempt) and got an error message stating that
/boot/boot-menu.b could not be found. Symlinking lilo-menu/boot.b to
boot-menu.b generated an error about it not being a regular file.
Ultimately installed GRUB.

First boot was a disaster, it installed Aurora despite being told not
to, and my keyboard (along with the rest of the system) locked up while
still on the Aurora screen (but after completing all of the init
scripts).

The initscripts errored badly on that boot as well, when they came to my
rc.firewall script (iptables based). The error regarded having an
incorrect module version. I suspect that the updated iptables package
wasn't installed in the upgrade.

I ultimately was forced to boot to my older 2.4.4 kernel based on ac11.
After booting that kernel and removing Aurora, I discovered that my
/etc/group file had been replaced during the upgrade (yes, the old one
was backed up, but still). Groups 500 and 501 (two users) no longer
existed along with urpmi and an administrative group (240, cvsuser).

On trying to recompile the 2.4.6-5mdk kernel, I stripped out most of the
things that would not be useful on the system (unused network features,
MTRR, IrDA, radio, v4l, etc). I noticed first of all that the
kernel-source package still requires egcs, but the kernel is compiled
with gcc, an oversight? The kernel proper compiled well, but the
modules died almost immediately, the errors from make modules are
attached (uncompressed, approx 159k).

I can provide a copy of the .config I used if desired.

I had similar input device problems with the 2.4.3-20mdk that shipped
with 8.0, so it seems apparent that something in the Mandrake kernel
configuration is not playing nice with this hardware.

Hardware is a Compaq Deskpro 4000/5200 (200 MHz Pentium) with 96 MB RAM,
6.4 GB, Voodoo 3 PCI, 56k ISA hardware modem, ESS1868 sound, PS/2 mouse
and keyboard.
