Hello,
I found the following message that may be interesting to provide a
better support for Firewire interfaces (ieee1394) in next Mandrake.
What I found so far is that if the modules for ieee1394 support are
included in the Mandrake kernel, the /dev/raw1394 dev-node is missing,
and the compulsory libraw1394 package which all programs will use is
absent (I checked both cooker and contribs). It seems very important:

Maybe the Mandrake developers will find some useful information in the
following message, in order to make video edition work "out of the box"
in the next Mandrake. I quoted the whole message for the quality of
information, but all Mandrake seems to miss is a dev-node and the
"libraw1394" package.

I got FIREWIRE CAPTURE WORKING! (sorry for shouting but I'm excited).
Here's a couple of screenshots from my first (successful) attempts :

I don't know why the preview window went out-of-sync. It worked once. I
need to tweak some settings.

This is the playback of what I captured off my VCR tuner through a Sony
DVMC-DA1 analog-to-Firewire convertor box.
Again, here's where to get the editor :

******
Just in case anyone else is interested/struggling, here's how I got it
working.
First see if your OHCI card is on the supported list :
http://linux1394.sourceforge.net/hcl.php
Then get the 2.4 kernel (I'm using 2.4.0 and Red Hat 7).
Download this patch and replace the files in
/usr/src/linux-2.4.0/drivers/ieee1394/.
http://www.schirmacher.de/arne/dvgrab/ieee1394-2.4.0.patched.tar.gz
Build (or rebuild ;>) the kernel. Read the kernel howto if you've never
done this. And be sure to edit /etc/lilo.conf to add/keep pointers for
any previously installed kernel, so you can "go back" if something gets
messed up.
http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html
When you "make xconfig", "ieee1394" will be grayed out. Fix this by
clicking on "code maturity options" and set it to allow
development/experimental code. Then under the 1394 options, I selected
"y" to kernel support, and "y" rather than "m" for "ohci1394",
"raw1394" and "ieee1394" options. You can compile them as modules but I
find it more convenient to build them in since I'll be using it a lot.
When you reboot, check /var/log/messages for an indication that your
card was detected and configured properly. Then, plug in and turn on
your camcorder. If all goes well, there will be some disk activity.
Check /var/log/messages again and verify the camcorder was detected. If
not, troubleshoot.
Once your card and camera are detected, you're almost home free.
You need to have at least Xfree86 v4.01 installed to play back video
with Broadcast 2000. I won't go into that. See http://www.xfree86.org if
you need binaries or source or documentation.
Now, the parts not very many people mention!
You MUST make dev-nodes or you won't be able to capture.
For video 1394, type this command (as root)
mknod -m 666 /dev/video1394 c 172 0
The one NOBODY mentions is the "raw 1394" dev-node.
The simplest way to get it going is to download the source for "libraw",
and after you untar it, do a ./configure, then "make" and then "make
install". Note that the "make install" creates the dev-node and also
puts files where many other programs look for the, This was frustrating
me a lot because there is a "raw1394" driver module already so it wasn't
obvious that I needed to do this.
Once that's all installed, launch Broadcast 2000, click on
"settings...preferences" and change the video
capture driver from LML-33 to IEEE-1394 (see my second screenshot).
After that it's intuitive.
After I test my camcorder this weekend I'll make sure I add it to the
hardware compatibility list at Source Forge...
Please feel free to copy this post, forward it as you like..correecting
any inaccuracies or omissions (it would be nice if you drop me a line if
you find this helpful - it took me half an hour to type this up... ;>)
Happy editing!
Keith

I will test if my configuration is correct tomorrow (I miss a cable for
my camcorder).
