Well, although nothing at all specific is in place in the US or 
elsewhere (except a certain diplomatic procedure in switzerland), 
recently that gap has been bridged greatly.  A mini peace treaty for the 
mid east was signed electronically via type-in name ~3 yrs ago.
Although not currently pertinant, it is worth investigation i suppose.
