boot in single user
unmount /boot and /home if mounted
use "tune2fs -j devicefile" to create the journal
edit /etc/fstab
reboot

In fact, you don't even have to be in single user or umount the filesystems,
you can just run "tune2fs -j" against them, edit /etc/fstab and reboot, but in
this case the journal will have a file entry in the root directory of the
filesystem named ".journal".
