Yes, I had this problem too, even my machine only has a single Mandrake.
Tried to upgrade to kernel-2.4.8-2?mdk, all attempts to all kernel versions
are failure. Here are the relevant software versions (IMHO):
mkinitrd-3.1.6-7mdk
kernel-2.4.7-7mdk
initscripts-6.17-2mdk
util-linux-2.11h-3mdk
