I was able to solve this problem. I installed the latest util-linux,
e2fsprogs, binutils, ran mkinitrd and lilo, and now this is OK. But now
I have got another problem, a bit further. e2fsck complains that
/dev/hda5 (root fs) is already mounted, so it cannot continue. Any
ideas?
