No, it probably isn't. :)

It could not be the boot medium. I have tried several disks, and
re-downloaded the disk image several times (from different sites) just to
be sure. This also happens when I boot with a Mandrake Linux 8.1 final CD.

They all have Kernel 2.4.8-24mdkBOOT if I'm not mistaken. And as I said,
my old L-M 7.02 CD starts without a problem.

The computer is a Dell OptiPlex GX150 P3 1GHz, which is based around
Intel's i815 chipset. No strange hardware in there.

There's no bootloader on the harddrive. I even issued the fdisk /mbr to be
sure nothing was there.

I'm out of ideas...
