        Let me guess:
- 7.2 uses as kernel 2.2.
- there is a way to generate a kernel in 2.2 & 2.4 making the fs
  incompatible with 2.2 (I think that it is the sparse super
        capability).

could you check/sent me the output of:

tune2fs -l <your partition>
