At work I have a Dell Precision 220 (Dual Processor with 1 CPU),
and since kernel-2.4.16-... I cannot shutdown. This is caused
by sync() locking up (I believe that it is going into an
uninterruptible sleep).

Previous kernels were fine on this machine, and indeed I have
reverted to the stock 8.1 kernel.

Does anybody know what has changed in the sync() calls behaviour?

I cannot seem to find the source to the sync() call, although I
presume that it calls the relevant file system sync()'s.

If somebody can direct me as to where the sync() function is in
the sources I will look at the changes between the last working
version (2.4.15 something), and the current 2.4.17 to see if I
can see what might be causing the problem.

Thanks
