I'm having the same problems on a P3/550 system using an abit BF6
motherboard w intel440BX chipset. Adding noapic to the kernel boot
helps nothing. As a matter of fact, the kernel enables APIC even when I
have it turned off in the bios. APIC has caused countless hard lockups,
most consistently during periods of no usage (i.e. overnight).

These problems do not occur with the pre-APIC kernels
    (specifically, 2.4.16-11).

I'm having to re-compile the kernel every fscking time there is a new
release... As you can imagine, that takes quite a while...

Please either disable APIC from the standard kernel or
    create a laptop specific kernel.

How about a generic noapic kernel... That would be most helpful...
