I am trying to get an ISA modem working under Mandrak 8.2 beta 1. (I need to install beta 2, but that has not happened yet...)
mimicom can talk to the modem. (The modem is on /dev/ttyS1.) I can run at commands and the modem responds correctly. I have created the /dev/modem symlink to /dev/ttyS1. HOWEVER, harddrake will *not* see the modem! When I reboot, it does not see an added device. I have added /dev/modem to the probe section of harddrake.. I have tried adding /dev/ttyS1 to the probe section for the modem as well. Does not have an effect. I have run "modemconf" and that did not help either. There does not seem to be any configuration tools associated with harddrake or its cousins for modems. (Especially ISA modems.) Also, it is not a "plug and play" modem. It actually has jumpers! It is hardwired to "com2" aka "ttyS1". Why am I using an ISA modem in this PCI world? (Especially when I have DSL?) Because I have a US Robotics Voice/Fax ubermodem that understands caller id, can be turned into an answering machine, as well as be used for faxing. (Which is one of the few things Neetwork Associates seems to understand for domain changes.) Any idea on how to get hard drake to force a scan for a modem? (Especially when you know where it is in the first place?) Linuxconf seems to be able to find it just fine. Harddrake cannot. Another thing that needs to be added to the control center is a reasonable (non-hidden) way to reconfigure a monitor. I have had a couple of monitors die, as have friends. It should be pretty easy to change a monitor. It is not. You have to dig through a bunch of semi-related menues in expert mode to find this. It should not be that difficult.
