hi,

since kernel 2.4.17 apm functionality is broken on my dell inspiron 8100.

it causes system freeze at shutdown instead of power off, unwanted power
off after a period of idle time and i cannot access to the fn functions
anymore (bios setup, crt/lcd switching,...) without freezing the system.

after searching on usenet, i've found the following solutions:

1. turning off CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC

2. or applying the following patches from
http://www.csd.uu.se/~mikpe/linux/kernel-patches/2.4/
         patch-boot-time-ioremap
         patch-early-dmi-scan
         patch-dmi-apic-fixups

i've choosed the 2nd way and i've no more apm problems (suspend works too).

i hope this post will be useful for a inspiron-compatible 8.2 version...

best regards

frank
