Nope, I will guess that you have hardware problems, could you test if
your machine survives a night memtest86?

Compiling a kernel is a user operation, i.e. it can't freeze the
machine at all.

Same thing, I will guess that you have any problem in the hardware,
slave ide fail on reboot should never happend for a crash :(

Humm, systems looks quite normal, i.e. nothing really special, I have
just asked, and here people are running ATI radeaos without
problems. ...

Current iptables should work with that kernel (i.e. 8.1 iptables don't
work with new kernel, new iptables should work with both).
