I also have an ATI rage 128 card , and encounter the same X freeze but
only when i use  specific application [rpmdrake, drakfont, xmms,...no
problem whith kde's application ]. But i succeed the test suggested by 
Guillaume Rousse.
Commenting "glx" and "dri" line on /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 fix the problem
for me ; commenting "v4l" line don't fix it.
