I don't read it that way. Andrej is technically competent and contributes a
lot of stuff to this list, so I have no problem at all with the idea that
this gains him extra `brownie points' and therefore some authority to tell
people off.

However, there is no direct connection between technical competence and
diplomatic or management skills. I do see a lot of people getting stomped for
not including some relevant piece of information in their bug report. This
discourages contribution - which is likely to be very destructive in the long
run - and may result in an important bug remaining unsquashed due to poor
presentation.

I've suggested a second, filtered list with `post-thru' to this list plus a
formal and dynamic Cooker FAQ, and others have suggested a sign-on FAQ
explaining what information is needed to make a report useful to Mandrake. I
would add that it is critical to include a simple recipe for obtaining the
necessary information (e.g. for PCI/AGP device problems, do `lspcidrake -v'
and include output in message, for all device problems, lsmod is generally
helpful).

I'd be delighted with either solution, but would like a brief regular
(weekly?) post referring to a full copy of the signon FAQ if the second
solution is adopted. I don't think now is a good time to revolutionise the
Cooker process, however. OTOH, someone with time (-: ie not a Mandrake
employee :-) could start on a FAQ; if even a skeletal one were posted, others
could fill in the details.

Cheers; Leon
