Well, to be honest, for my private use, I also recompile PHP with the needed --with's. But as far as the distribution is concerned, I can understand the current way of doing things. In theory, you won't need to recompile the main php package and thus can easily upgrade to new RPM releases without losing anything. Not so with the RedHat way of doing things, or am I wrong?
