My point was that because I update using urpmi I had both libalsa1 and 2 installed and
prior to this thread there had been nothing to indicate that libalsa1 is useless.

I am not arguing just giving the info as supplied by rpm.
 rpm -q --requires libalsa1
rpmlib(VersionedDependencies) <= 3.0.3-1
/sbin/ldconfig
/sbin/ldconfig
rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1
rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1
ld-linux.so.2
libc.so.6
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1.3)

 rpm -q --requires libalsa2
kernel >= 2.4.18
rpmlib(VersionedDependencies) <= 3.0.3-1
/sbin/ldconfig
/sbin/ldconfig
rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1
rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1
ld-linux.so.2
libc.so.6
libdl.so.2
libm.so.6
libpthread.so.0
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1.3)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2)
libdl.so.2(GLIBC_2.0)
libdl.so.2(GLIBC_2.1)
libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.0)
libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.1)

Again prior to this thread there was nothing that provided this info if both pkgs were
installed leading, at least me, to the mistaken belief that both still functioned.
