That's because Redhat ships with a bytecode-interpreter-enabled freetype
. The bytecode interpreter is patented by Apple, and thus this is
actually illegal, unless Redhat has negotiated a blanket license for all
people who could ever use redhat.

Try using a bytecode-interpreter-enabled freetype2 RPM:
Mandrake 8.2: http://plf.zarb.org/rpm/8.2/i586/freetype2-2.0.9-3plf.i586.rpm

If you are running cooker, you must rebuild the current freetype2 srpm
with '--with plf' as an argument to your rpm build command.

You might also want to try an OpenOffice built against the system
freetype2, instead of it's own internal freetype2 with the bytecode
interpreter disabled.

Mandrake 8.2:
http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/mandrake8.2/OpenOffice.org-1.0-3mdk.i586.rpm

You will probably need to reboot to see the difference.

Evidence of possible patent violation (from Redhat 7.3):
