Because, now someone downloads a new build from OpenOffice (or even
worse, doesn't know that Mandrake ships with OpenOffice.org - I have
seen this on the OpenOffice list also, and install an older build), and
then they complain that it doesn't work, even though they fill in the
right path. And my C/C++/GTK/QT isn't good enough to do add another
checkbox for "Using Mandrake RPMs" or such.

Plus, it prevents people from accidentally running the wrong script
(/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice) and complaining that not only do
the fonts look bad, but none of them are available inside OO.o

Remember, the world is very good at creating idiots ...

Is there any good reason not to apply my suggestion?

It runs fine. Mandrake 8.2 stock except for KDE3, updated Mozilla (rc2)
and OpenOffice. Just the quickstarter applet crashes on logout, but OO.o
runs much better than under KDE.

I like the look of Gnome, but since I don't even run cooker, I will wait
until 2.0 is out before I even attempt. I just hope they realise the
importance of fixing the file dialog box (the thing that sucks
second-most about Gnome, Nautilus being No1).
