It's actually possible to have almost the whole filesystem (from / downwards) mounted read-only or using tmpfs. This means that your box is pretty much guaranteed to withstand a kernel panic or power failure without any ill-effects on the filesystem. You have to patch initscripts a little to prevent complaints at startup. I did submit the patches a while back but they were rejected, because no-one could see why having / mounted ro would be useful... Michael
