Ok, the point has been raised before, but i'll just do it again. Because I think
it is necessary.
There was a poll on pclinuxonline recently, most of you might have read it. It was
about the KDE3 install dir. Almost 3 quarters of the users did not want it in /usr/bin.

Very understandable to me. Not that I want to see it neccesarily in /opt/kde3,
/usr/kde3
or /usr/kde/3 would be fine, but /usr/bin is just plain stupid. It gives you an
enormous directory,
without any hope of finding your specific kde program, and it makes it hard to have a
2 or more
kde versions installed.

There is, IMHO, no obvious reason to clog /usr/bin with GUI programs, we do not use
X11R6 because
it was so estetic, it was usefull to put your X proggies in a seperate dir, same goes
for KDE AND gnome
and whatever Desktop Env. you like.

Seems that opt is to be for 'optitional software', one could argue about wherer or not
DEs are optitional,
but if not, /usr/kde((/)3) provide a better alternative that plain usr.
On a side note, (some) KDE developpers themselves seem to think /usr/kde is much
better than /usr/. Although
I'm not sure wheter this is a valid argument or not.

So, does anybody date to say otherwise? :)

Danny
