I don't think it needs to be added.  I simply installed the mailcap
package and everything started working right.  It automatically searches
for ~/.mailcap and /etc/mailcap apparently.  From rfc1524.c:

 /* rfc1524 specifies that a path of mailcap files should be searched.
  * joy.  They say 
  * $HOME/.mailcap:/etc/mailcap:/usr/etc/mailcap:/usr/local/etc/mailcap,
  * etc and overriden by the MAILCAPS environment variable, and, just to
  * be nice, we'll make it specifiable in .muttrc
  */

vi applied some formatting when I pasted it in, but the words are the
same.
