I use a not-exactly-wonderful CD-RW (iomega zipCD 650), which is external USB 
1.1, yet it wrote and fixated all three 9.0 beta 2 disks perfectly and they 
mount in both it and the internal CD-ROM (Teac 24x).

I was amazed at this given the age of the external drive and the slowness and 
potential flakiness of the connection and suspect that, using CD Creator or 
Nero under Windows, I wouldn't have had the same success.

The burns were all done in the simplest way via arson (arson.sourceforge.net) 
and 'just worked' without any fiddling with settings.
