That I know, but if this is a cooker problem, the packages with problems must be cooker (otherwise people are posting to the wrong list). Nothing in cooker/contrib should allow anything to create MP3s, so there is no reason why grip (implied in the mail) should be able to make an MP3 using an external encoder. Not having used ripperx before, I wouldn't know if it uses an internal or external encoder.
