Everything is fine before the test phase, and just dandy after the 
back-and-forth cycle I have to go thru. Just the test screen is funky.

But I've -never- had the system lock up from the mouse test.

same here, but I have the same problem with a real PS2 mouse.

I would have no problem with the mouse even being disabled until the test 
screen since that seems to fix the problem, but that just seems kind of 
cheesy for a modern OS distribution. But the main problem here (I think), is 
that  having install "fail" where you can't even configure the mouse is 
probably going to stop a significant number of first time users from trying 
to finish the install.
