Now that you say something about that I think you're right.  I remember
pre-betas I was using everybuddy without worrying about soundwrapper.
Everybuddy automatically launches esd for sound output.  But at some
point I started having the garbage.    Humm maybe sometime today I'll
try booting back into an older kernel and see if that fixes it... if it
does then we know it's the driver.
