Well I finally got around to booting into an older kernel.  3mdk and
previously it worked fine.  I don't have 4mdk, but I do have 5mdk.
5mdk is where it breaks for me.  But 4mdk is where alsa 0.9.0rc3 came
into play.  So it looks to me like it is indeed a driver bug.  

What changed in the VIA-686 and the 8233 drivers in Alsa 0.9.0rc3 I'm
not sure.  Maybe Juan can help us there.
