i) resolv.conf can not be written. Happened with both rc2 and rc3.
Work around: go to text console 2 and rm /mnt/etc/resolv.conf and
repeat network configuration. For some reason resolv.conf is link
to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf on my 8.2 Oh, I see problem, the absolute
links are incorrect when mounted under /mnt/
ii) Sound didn't work in 2 or 3. I tried to fix it and never did work in
2, but 3 started working (ie sox play) after I tried a sport game.
And then sox, played .wav files. (?)
iii) HP 1200 printer quit working after upgrade under rc2 and 3. Tried
configuring many times and wouldn't work. But I read someone said
deleting printer and reinstalling worked. Tried on rc3 and now
works fine.
iv) rc2 and 3 have problem in /var/lib/rpm/alternatives/lpr
contents not right, had only "2277" and obviously should have
something else. (?) Deleting lpr made error message go away.
v) Many mouse problems after upgrading. One of 9.0 betas(?) made
dual optical USB mouse (keyboard is PS/2) fail to work. Mousedrake
would get it working but after reboot it was gone again.
But with rc2 the mouse always worked. Now with rc3 its like with
the beta, the mouse has to be fixed after each reboot. I see
with rc3 the hardware list thinks the mouse is a serial mouse
( /dev/ttyS0 ). After telling it is a USB wheel (which mouse config
knows) it tries to configure a serial mouse judging from the
messages that scroll by; although the mouse continues to work.
vi) /var/log/explanations is zero size, and never written to in rc3?
Don't know about others.
Install Time Comment / Question / How to Fix (reduce)?
Installation time seems extremely long compared to what I would expect
based on install time of RedHat 5.2 from a few years ago. When I
installed RedHat 5.2 (I think) it took a total of 7 minutes for both CDs
on a 300MHz Pentium II, SCSI-2 wide cheetah from a Yamaha 4416 (ie:
4x4x16x). With the much faster speeds today using 52x CD onto IDE of
24MB/sec write speed hard drive and 850 MHz Athlon why does it estimate
3 hours and 40 minutes and actually take about 75 minutes for 3 CDs.
If it is installing about 3x as much say 21 minutes on the old hardware
and today on faster hardware say only twice as fast it should be taking
about 10 minutes instead of 75 minutes.
Why is install about 8 times longer than it should be?
I have been upgrading since 7.2 (or 8.0?) and this is the most problems
with any development series that I have observed. There will have to be
at least 3 more release candidates to remove these (upgrade) problems
and probably many others since I have not spent much time looking.
Because of the rocky experience I've had this time around I can't
comment on appearance and other improvements that undoubtedly have been
made.
I do like the 1400x1050 video resolution (I don't remember this one
before). I'm using 16 bit color. The menu also gives a 24 bit selection
but no 32 bit color selection. Matrox is slow at 24 bit (WinBench) so I
would like to choose 32 bit. Is there a reason for no 32 bit?
I believe 9.0 will be very good!

PS: I bought an 80GB drive and dd'ed my 45GB drive to a file and so I'm
always starting from same point for upgrade (8.2 or is it 9.0 beta?).
