Sheesh. Yes, the hinting is rubbish because of stupid patent issues, this has been gone over before. This is why the PLF rpm looks better than the MDK one. This is also part of the point of freetype 2.1.x - it has a different, non-patent-infringing (supposedly) hinting mechanism. But I find with good fonts (the Microsoft ones) and PLF freetype2, font rendering is excellent, indeed a lot better than Windows. -- adamw
