some use KDE with mostly GTK based apps (hullo? that's me)

the choice stays, you can alter it anytime in KDE, the question is about
the default

keeping both desktops creates some form of competition, which is good

having them incompatible is bad
 

anyway, this whole argument is about file selection. On an average
machine you'll have now at least 3 different file selection boxes: KDE,
GNOME, Openoffice. If you like, you can add some more: gmplayer, gqview,
etc. It's a good idea to make their default behaviour as consistent as
possible. Doesn't matter which way, either make GNOME single click or
KDE double click, but make it the same.
